Globalization means that all societies face the same issues.
Edo, which was renamed Tokyo in September 1868, was one of the most populous cities in the world at that time. Edo developed a great deal of wisdom that is still applicable to today’s world.
The wisdom of Edo provides us with insights on how to deal with many of the issues caused by globalization.
This site aims to highlight some of that wisdom.
The wisdom of Edo in a Ukiyo-e scroll
Let’s explore some of that wisdom in a picture scroll from the beginning of the 19th century, the "Kidai Shōran."
The Kidai Shōran depicts everyday life on the main street of Edo, called Nihonbashi.
In this picture scroll, you can see how people in Edo adapted to living in the city and how they made the city prosper.
Zoom in on whatever part of the scroll grabs your attention and you can read explanations of the people and things depicted there.

In addition to the scroll, we spotlight such keywords as "sushi", "Edo castle" (the residence of the Shogun), "noren" curtains hanging in shop entrances and sustainability, which may be familiar also to people who have never visited Japan. We consider the history of these keywords and look for their relevance to the modern world.
